Marathon man 'glad it’s all over' 06.06.11

by Eamonn MacDermott, Inishowen Independent

CARNDONAGH man Dessie Doherty (Fintan) has presented to local charities the money he raised by running the Boston Marathon.
Last month Dessie completed the Boston Marathon in the enviable time of 4 hours 47 minutes and along the way he raised almost €7,000 for three local groups.
On Saturday night, he presented the cheques at the Century Bar in Carndonagh to RNLI, Duchenne Ireland and Carn FC youth teams. Dessie said the marathon Stateside was ‘hard going’ but a great experience.
He said: “I would not class myself as a runner but I have done marathons before in Dublin. But Boston was something else. It was a great atmosphere and the whole 26 miles of the route was lined with people.
“When you reached the last five miles on the way into Boston the crowd must have been two and three deep.
“It was really well organised with water stations every mile and medical stations.
“On the day of the actual run it was around 18 degrees which was pretty warm and there were a few occasions when I thought I might not complete the course. But I managed it and finished in 4 hours 47 minutes which is the time I had trained for and so I was pleased with that.
“Then there was even a group from Inishowen there to cheer me on at the finish.”
He added: “I try and run a bit every week but for the marathon I started serious training around December.”
When asked would he do it all again Dessie said his feeling was that he would not but added: “You always say that don’t you.”
