Racers risking lives at Inch Lake 29.07.11

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

SO-CALLED boy racers are putting lives at risk near one of Inishowen’s most scenic and protected beauty spots, it has been claimed.
The young drivers have been witnessed performing various dangerous stunts such as ‘doughnuts’ and ‘handbrake turns’ in a carpark at the Farland, on the shores of Inch Lake, a special area of conservation
A concerned local resident, who contacted the Inishowen Independent this week fears that someone could be seriously injured or killed.
“The carpark is used everyday by local walkers and often attracts young families with children. Motorists turn into it fairly blind and it is such a confined space that I’m concerned that someone could be badly hurt or worse,” she said.
“I think local drivers must be involved in the activity because the carpark is out of the way; you would need to know it was there before you drove down. Something needs to be done before it is too late,” she added.
The tranquillity of Inch Lake which locals say is being destroyed by the dangerous antics of so-called boy racers..
Local County Councillor for the area, Paul Canning said the so-called boy racers are causing a danger to themselves and others.
“They are breaking the law by performing these outrageous car activities on public roads causing a danger to themselves and other members of the community. They are also causing a noise nuisance at all the wrong times and venues,” he said.
Cllr. Canning warned that the young motorists must be educated in a bid to prevent future road tragedies.
“Judge John O’Hagan spoke out against young Donegal drivers as a reckless disease and unfortunately he has merit in his words. I think it is time that we as a community started to work with the young drivers through proper education and facilities,” he said.
“I was fortunate enough to witness the Smoke Signals Diffing that took place in Newtowncunningham during The Donegal Rally weekend, a true entertaining spectacle. I witnessed some of the best skilled and controlled driving by young motorists in a controlled environment and not on a public road.”
“I am also aware of the work that Daniel Rodgers and his team are doing at the DDT Raceway in Sallybrook, Manorcunningham in providing a facility to try to help these young drivers. I think that the young people need to take note of the statistics and as much as they live for their sport and their vehicle, they need to live first!” Cllr. Canning added.
