Shane eyes Rugby World Cup 04.02.11

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

A BUNCRANA rugby enthusiast could be in line to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to New Zealand later this year after reaching the final 12 of a nationwide competition to find Munster’s greatest fan.
Shortlisted in the final dozen of the Meteor M-Team competition, Shane McDaid (35) has already been voted the greatest Munster fan from outside the province; now he has his sights set on the overall prize and a trip Down Under for the Rugby World Cup next September.
“I think my wife Alison wants to win more than I do!” Shane joked.
“It would be a great achievement to win and it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity. To go to the Rugby World Cup would be amazing, a dream come true.”
Originally from Muineagh in the parish of Buncrana, Shane’s love affair with Munster began in the unlikely setting of the Isle of Man.
“I was over there working and many of the lads I hung around with were big Munster fans so I followed them too. We used to play rugby then watch games in the bar afterwards; it just sort of grew from there,” he said.
“Munster was the only Irish team I ever saw that wanted to win everything. They never settle for second best.”

A veteran of scores of Munster games, Shane has travelled to see the southern reds for much of the last decade, watching Magner’s League, Heineken Cup action and a high-profile clash against the mighty All-Blacks in 2008.
A former second row player for Inishowen Rugby Club, Shane is hoping that everyone in the peninsula will get behind his bid for Kiwi glory. His biggest supporter, son Darragh (3), is also a massive rugby fan!
Shane must secure enough votes from the public to win one of seven places on the M-Team. The M-Team will then battle it out in a series of challenges testing their knowledge and passion for Munster Rugby to win this trip of a lifetime.
To help the Buncrana father reach the final seven, rate his M-Team profile on www.ComeOnMunster.ie . The seven highest rated profiles going through to the final seven.
Everyone who logs on to rate their favourite entrant will be in with a chance to win a Sony Ericsson X8 mobile and Munster Rugby goodies. Closing date is Sunday February 6.
