Jai's wheely brave bike tour 26.07.11

by Linda McGrory

A TEENAGER is wheely doing his bit for charity on a gruelling 1,600km tour around Ireland on a one-wheeled bike.
Perched precariously high up on his unicycle, Jai Caorthann has been turning heads and stopping traffic of the four-wheeled variety everywhere he goes including Inishowen where he passed through on Friday.
The 18-year old outdoor enthusiast started his quirky challenge in Rosslare, Co Wexford on July 6 in aid of Special Olympics Ireland and Brain Tumour UK. He is travelling clockwise on his circumnavigation of the country and has so far taken in all the counties along the south, west and north coast including Cork, Clare, Sligo, Donegal and Antrim. He is cycling the east coast this week through Louth, Meath, Dublin and Wicklow and hopes to reach Rosslare again, on Wednesday, July 27.

Jai, who studies adventure and media at Cumbria University, is doing the brave bike ride in memory of a friend.
"Last year, Joshua Davies, a high school friend of mine passed away after a long struggle with a brain tumour, and I would like to raise funds and awareness to help stop others from going through what he had to experience," he said.
He admits that his "bum is sore" as the finishing line nears but says he has been enjoying the scenery from the high perch of his bike and its 36" diameter wheel. "I can see over the hedges," he told InishowenNews.com yesterday. Jai who was born in Ballingeary, Cork, but raised from the age of one in Hereford, England, hopes to raise almost £6,000 for his two chosen charities.
