Pensioner in Malin to Mizen challenge 29.06.12

A GLENEELY pensioner who is preparing to cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head next month has invited the public to come along to a special fundraising Night at the Races in the Orchard Bar in the village tonight, Friday.
Denis Doherty (Turas), a retired council worker, will leave Mizen Head on Monday 23 July and after five long days in the saddle, expects to reach Malin Head the following Friday, 27 July, raising funds for Donegal cancer services along the way.
“I had cancer five years ago, but I’m better now, thank God,” the 68 year old said this week. “My brother Ultan had it too and my daughter was very ill with it.
“I’m fit and healthy now and just wanted to do something to raise money for cancer services, and hit upon the idea of a Mizen to Malin Head cycle.”
He reckons you’d need to be mad to do a cycle like that.
“I’m kinda mad anyway,” he quipped. “It’s not that I love cycling and want to spend five days on a bike, but it is for a good cause.”
Some of the money raised will go to Eamon McDevitt at the Letterkenny Good as New Shop towards refurbishing a new 21-seat minibus they have acquired to take Donegal cancer patients to Dublin and Galway for treatment.
Pensioner Denis Doherty prepares for Malin to Mizen challenge.
“I was treated in St Luke’s in Dublin myself, and know how hard the travelling is and refurbishing this bus, by adding toilet facilities and the like, will make it a wee bit easier,” the retired Donegal County Council employee said.
Denis will be joined on the marathon 400+ mile cycle by son Michael and son-in-law Shane Bradley, with the latter raising funds for the Chernobyl Children’s Fund. Daughter Breda will accompany the group in a support vehicle.
The group aims to cover about 80 miles a day and will follow a route from Mizen Head-Killarney-Lahinch-Claremorris-Donegal Town-Malin Head.
Horses and sponsorships are still available for tonight’s Night at the Race in Carrick’s Bar at €10 for a horse and €40 for a sponsorship.
“It’s been going well, the family have been out selling horses and my Carrick’s darts team pals, Liam McKinney, Paul McElhinney and Gerard Doherty, have been helping too.”
Tonight’s event gets underway shortly after 9pm, and anyone wishing to sponsor Denis for his cycle can get in touch with him on 07493 67179. (Inishowen Independent)
