Donegal library visits top 355,000 01.10.13

BOOKISH Donegal people visited public libraries around the county a whopping 355,000 times and borrowed some 372,000 items last year, new figures show.
The statistics show that library highlights include Seachtain na Gaeilge, the Bealtaine Festival and Summer Reading Programmes as well as next month's Wainfest Arts & Book Festival for children.
Meanwhile, library users and the public at large are being urged to help shape the public libraries of the future as part of the Government's Draft Public Library Strategy 2013 – 2017.
The Donegal Library Service wants to know what you think of the service provided by public libraries; what do you need from your public library and how can the service be developed and improved to meet yours and your community's needs.
"Our libraries provide a wide range of services both physical and virtual. There is a countywide network of 13 libraries, supplemented by 13 Taobh Tíre centres that service rural, isolated and island communities in partnership with the Library Service," said a Donegal spokesperson.
"We provide material for lending, reader development advice, internet access and support, information and reference resources and guidance, learning and e-learning activities, literacy support, cultural promotion and community development."
The national consultation document and template for comments are available on the Department of the Environment website. Comments should be submitted by e-mail or post no later than Friday, October 11, 2013 at 5pm. You can email your comments to librariesdevelopment@lgma.ie .
