Council launches composting campaign 01.05.14

DONEGAL households are throwing away an average of between €700 and €1000 worth of food each year.
Apart from the strain on food budgets, much of the leftovers are also going to landfill. Donegal County Council today launched an awareness campaign highlighting the benefits of composting your food waste. A selection of everyday food items can be composted such a fruit and vegetable peelings, bread, pasta, eggshells and teabags.
Some non food items such as grass cuttings, leaves, shredded paper and cardboard can also go into the composting bin. Compost bins can be purchased from your local council office for €13.
"Recycling and composting of domestic waste has been established as one way of reaching the target of biodegradable waste consigned to landfills.
"The amount of waste being sent to landfills has been a significant problem over the last few years although composting can help reduce the amount of waste being sent to the already overflowing landfills," the council said in a statement.
For more information on buying a compost bin call 074 91 53900 or to learn more about composting visit www.donegalcoco.ie or www.stopfoodwaste.ie .
