Greencastle Coast Guard hosts Buncrana RNLI 15.06.15

GREENCASTLE Coast Guard hosted the Buncrana RNLI yesterday when the Swilly crew arrived in the Foyle to showcase their state-of-the-art Shannon-class lifeboat.
The €2.4m vessel named 'Derek Bullivant' was escorted into the harbour by Greencastle Coast Guard vessel St Finnian around lunchtime.
They were welcomed by Greencastle Coast Guard officer-in-charge Charlie Cavanagh and crew members.
The dedicated local lifesaving squads, got the chance to swap notes about the latest technology they have at their disposal to help keep Inishowen seafarers safe.
The Shannon-class RNLI lifeboat, 'Derek Bullivant' moored at Greencastle pier.
The Shannon-class lifeboat, which was delivered to Buncrana pier in April, has a top speed of 25 knots and a range of 250 nautical miles.
Its water-jets make it manoeuvrable in all types of seas and uniquely allow the boat to land directly on shore.
Meanwhile, Greencastle Coast Guard took delivery of the St Finnian four years ago. Greencastle was one of only three Irish Coast Guard stations to get the €200,000 nine-metre vessel in 2011.
The St Finnian is a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) with a fibre-glass hull. It has electronic chart plotters, radar and an automatic vessel tracking system (AIS). For photos of Sunday's visit, click here .
