“Miracle” escape as tractor ploughs into pensioner’s front garden 25.10.17

An elderly woman had a miracle escape this morning after a tractor and trailer ploughed into her front garden narrowly missing her house by about ten feet.
The scene of a crash in Buncrana on Wednesday morning after a tractor and trailer ploughed through a front garden wall, narrowly missing the resident pensioner’s house.
The crash happened in Buncrana at about 9am, minutes after the busy school rush, when children would have been passing the pensioner’s house on their way to school. The nearby road would also have been much busier with school and worker traffic just a short time before.
It is understood the tractor, belonging to a local construction firm, may have lost power as it travelled down the steep road, locally known as ‘Hill Head’.

The vehicle apparently careered to the right across the oncoming carriageway before mounting a kerb. It then travelled across a green area, ploughed through the pensioner’s front garden wall before coming to a halt just feet from the small local authority bungalow.
Neighbours were left shocked and concerned for the elderly resident, aged in her 70s, who lives alone at Lisowen Avenue, just a five-minute walk from Buncrana town centre.
She was seen by two public health nurses shortly after the accident. Neighbours say she heard a loud bang at the time of the crash but was otherwise physically unhurt.
However, she regularly stands at her front pillar to chat to neighbours and is said to be shocked and worried following the accident.
The driver of the tractor was unhurt in the incident.

One local resident said: “It’s a miracle nobody was killed. The tractor could have gone into the front of the house and there could have been wains (children) or anyone walking in front of the house when it happened. It’s terrible.”
Employees of the construction company are currently working to free the tractor. Its front right tyre was badly damaged and buckled in the accident and requires replacement before attempts can be made to remove it. An investigation is expected to get underway shortly into the cause of the crash.
