First Inishowen Annual goes on sale 29.11.10

You from Inishowen? Scratching your head over what to get someone this Christmas? Look no further. The inaugural Inishowen Annual (2011) has just been published and is on sale in shops around Inishowen. Running at a bumper full-colour 100 pages, the book is jam-packed with stories, craic and photographs! Priced at a very affordable €15, this is without doubt the perfect Christmas stocking filler for Inishowen folk living at home or abroad.
So, if you pick up the Inishowen Annual between now and Christmas, what might you expect to find between the covers? Editor Dónal Campbell explains: “Those of us lucky enough to live in Inishowen are very aware of its rich seam of myth, history and legend. Every corner you turn you bump into someone with a story to tell, a yarn to relate, a point to make. The Inishowen Annual commits some of those tales to print – consisting of a fascinating cross-section of wonderful yarns and facts that owe their origins to Inishowen. Some date back centuries, others a few years. Some significant on a national scale, some entirely localised. It all adds up to a brilliant read.”
Specifically, readers can delve into fascinating articles on “bum-boating” on the Foyle; the Boundary Commission’s proposals to hand large chunks of modern-day Inishowen over to the North; Inishowen hauntings; purtie gathering a quarter of a century ago; some of Inishowen’s best known songs; the Quigley’s Point boxer who ruled the ring; tracing your family roots; and how the War of Independence was played out across the peninsula – to name eight of many.
“You’ll find faces from the past too in old photographs,” says Dónal, “as well as some notable creative writing contributions from Inishowen primary schoolchildren – the next generation to add to the layer of Inishowen folklore! Add in snippets from around the world and a healthy dose of humour and jokes and it contributes –I hope you’ll agree – to the perfect Christmas present for Inishowen folk here in the peninsula or indeed in any part of the world.”
The annual has been edited and published by the team responsible for the publication of the Inishowen Independent newspaper every Thursday. Campbell says they have received a fantastic reaction from everyone contacted in relation to the book – including advertisers who immediately recognized this book is likely to fly off the shelves this Christmas: “A huge thank you to each and everyone of our advertisers and to Healthwise Pharmacies in particular – we are proud to publish this book in association with Liam and his team in four Healthwise branches across Inishowen. We have been overwhelmed with advance orders received for the book.”
The book is now sale at shops around Inishowen and sells at just €15. It can also be ordered by telephoning 074 93 21510. The book can be posted within the Republic of Ireland for €2 and €4.50 elsewhere in the world.
