Lalor to stand down from Council 26.03.10

COUNCILLOR Daren Lalor has announced that he is to stand down from Buncrana Town Council. Cllr Lalor, a married father of four young children, took the decision to pursue a new educational direction in his life.
The English-born councillor was first elected to Buncrana Town Council in June 2004 and was re-elected last June. He said he remained "a proud member of Sinn Féin" but wanted to pursue a new educational direction in his life at this time".
"It has been a privilege to serve the people of Buncrana as a Sinn Féin councillor on our town council. I want to thank all those who have worked with me and supported me over the last number of years," said Cllr Lalor last night.
"Like many living through this economic crisis, I have reflected on my professional future over recent times and I have decided to pursue a new educational direction in my life. I remain a proud member of the Sinn Féin party and I offer my full support to the person selected by my fellow members of Buncrana Sinn Féin to replace me on the council."
Paying tribute to Cllr Lalor, his Sinn Féin colleague Cllr Pádraig MacLochlainn said: "Daren is a man of the highest integrity who will be sorely missed on council.
Cllr Daren Lalor
It has been my privilege to work alongside him over recent years on a range of issues. All who know him always remark that he is a thoroughly decent and hard working man."
Cllr Lalor was one of the driving forces within the local Sinn Féin team that brought the Irish-language secondary school, Choláiste Chineal Eoghain, to Buncrana.
Cllr MacLochlainn said Cllr Lalor worked in partnership with community, sporting, youth and resident groups across Buncrana and delivered on issues including a youth band competition, five-a-side tournaments, youth information days, and the Mill Walk.
"He particularly championed the causes of combating domestic violence across Inishowen and youth support. Daren personified, as a councillor, everything that a republican should be and I am very proud that he was a Sinn Féin councillor.
"I look forward to working with Daren and the person selected to replace him on council in building a new Ireland based on fairness and decency," added Cllr Lalor.
