Derry tunes up for jazz 26.03.10

THE countdown to Derry's biggest annual musical festival began this week with the official launch of the city's Jazz and Big Band Festival 2010.
The popular music festival will take place over the May Day Holiday weekend from Thursday, April 29 to Monday, May 3.
Derry Mayor, Cllr Paul Fleming said the 2010 festival looked set to be the best yet.
“Every year we see the city build on the success of this internationally renowned festival. The reputation of the festival has become so strong that we are now able to attract world famous artists while encouraging our own home grown talent," said Cllr Fleming.
Mirenda Rosenberg and her band who feature on the packed programme for the Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival 2010. A packed programme will see more than 75 venues hosting over 300 musicians in the city for Northern Ireland’s 'event of the year' as awarded by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.
The headline act will be legendary ex-Rolling Stone bassman Bill Wyman and his Rhythm Kings including the vocals of Georgie Fame. Renowned for their fantastic live performances Bill Wyman
and his Rhythm Kings are making their only appearance in Ireland this year at The City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival.
Other acts to look out for are Slovakian born child prodigy, Andreas Varady, a 12-year-old virtuoso jazz guitarist.
Edinburgh jazz legend, Tommy Smyth, US sensation Mirenda Rosenberg and her band as well as a large number of local and national artists will also feature on the packed bill.
