Drive to make Derry 'university city' 29.01.10

A DRIVE to make Derry a university city with more than 10,000 students has been welcomed by the local mayor.
Derry Mayor Cllr Paul Fleming said the partnership approach taken by the University of Ulster and the University for Derry (U4D) pressure group would be vital in the development and expansion of the Magee campus.
“I think that a collective approach is the best way forward to successfully deliver on the proposed development and expansion plans for the Magee campus," said Cllr Fleming.
"Derry City Council is supportive of ongoing efforts to create a university city that has 10,000 students and that focuses on courses for the 21st century.
University of Ulster, Magee Campus "We believe it will not only benefit the local economy but will expand the skills and employment opportunities available."
The local mayor said promotion and expansion of Magee Campus would be pivotal to the future regeneration of Derry and
the North West.
"The attractiveness of the city as a location for education, business growth and investment are closely linked and progress on increasing the graduate resources will improve the city's regeneration opportunities," he said.
He said partnership efforts among various public agencies to tackle the economic downturn and the attainment of essential skills would be essential for the city to compete for business, investment and education resources.
“I am confident that with this partnership approach we can successfully build on the University of Ulster’s strong attributes to seek further expansion and development opportunities for the Magee Campus that ill benefit the entire city and region,” he added.
