FBI golfers net thousands for charity 04.10.10

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

AN INISHOWEN sporting organisation has raised thousands of euro for vital local projects over the past three years.
Established in 2007, the Fahan, Burt and Inch (FBI) Golf Society is currently raising funds for a new football kit for the children of St. Aengus’ National School, Bridgend.
Far from being secret US Marshals as the name might suggest, the FBI is made up of golfers from Fahan, Burt and Inch!
Apart from garnering much-need funds for Inishowen, the FBI society offers budget golf to local men.
Going from strength to strength in the past few years, the group now has more than 100 members from all over south Inishowen.
Members of the FBI Golf Society from Fahan, Burt and Inch: Eamonn McDermott, Kevin McDermott, Gary McLaughlin, Kevin McGrath and Andy McDermott.
Group spokesperson Kevin McGrath said the large number of golfers allows the FBI to do business with local courses.
“Because there are so many of us we are able to negotiate a competitive rate with golf courses, who are delighted to see the FBI coming! With discounted green fees we can then ask members to donate a few euro to charity.” he said.
“We have had great support from Inishowen businesses too, many of whom have donated prizes for various events. Our success would not be possible without the support of the local business community.”
The Fahan, Burt and Inch Golf Society also caters for non-golfers, who want to get involved in supporting local charities while having a good day out. Councillor John Ryan is a non-playing member of the society.
Born out of the Inch Island Community Association and Inch Lake Society a number of years ago, the FBI golfers are set to descend on Ballybofey and Stranorlar this Saturday, October 2, with all funds going to St. Aengus’ National School children - the chosen charity project of current captain Andy McDermott.
