ICR quiz helps rebuild QPS 19.03.10

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

A LOCAL radio station has come to the aid of a football club that was the victim of a malicious fire earlier this year.
In response to the arson attack at Quigley’s Point Swifts in January, the sports team at ICRfm contacted club officials and offered to organise a fundraising quiz to help raise money to replace some of the damaged equipment. All the club’s underage gear was destroyed in the blaze leaving young teams unable to take part in soccer activities.
The communities of Muff and Quigley’s Point are now busy brushing up on their general knowledge ahead of tonight's special quiz night in the Carman’s Inn.
Quizmaster for the night, PJ McLaughlin, presenter of the ICR Sports Show, said he was horrified that such an attack should take place on a club, which promotes sport and benefits the youth of the area.
"The popularity of our Sunday afternoon sports show is in the main due to the input and co-operation of club personnel, who make the commitment to ensure there is someone at their game to give us live updates and match reports,” he said.
“Since the launch of the programme, three years ago, the Swifts are an ideal example of this co-operation. People at the club like Sean Gallagher, Terence Hegarty and Lawrence McColgan always ensure that we have the information as it happens. We are delighted to offer this gesture of solidarity to the club and we hope that the public will come along tomorrow night to support the club.”
Paying tribute to the Carman’s Inn, who donated €100 to the quiz prize fund, Quigley’s
Point Swifts PRO, Terence Hegarty, said he was heartened by ICR’s gesture of support.
“Everyone at the club is very grateful to PJ and his sports team for hosting the quiz. ICR came up with the idea and we are delighted to accept their contribution,” he said.
“We have had amazing support from the entire Inishowen community and it is heartening to see everyone rally round. On the field we are rivals but off it, everyone is together. We are hoping for a big crowd at the Carman’s tomorrow night and the QPS club will certainly be well represented,” Hegarty added.
The ICR sports team of Claire and Emma McDermott, Marie McDonald, Susan Logue and Emmett Clarke will make up a team, while co-presenters Paddy Corr (score-keeper) and PJ Mc Laughlin (quizmaster) will also be in attendance. The action gets underway at the Carman’s at 9.30pm tonight, Friday, March 19.
