Burnfoot to host major Karate
event

AILEACH Karate Club
will play host to martial artists from England,
Scotland and as far away as Romania with a major
tournament in Burnfoot at the end of the month.
The team will be in fighting form when the visiting
Karate hopefuls descend on the border village for
the club's annual outing.
The tournament will follow hot on the heels of the
Irish International Karate Grand Prix last weekend
which saw the Aileach fighters and their colleagues
in the Ulster Karate Federation in top condition.
The squad came home with a substantial haul of 3
gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals. |

Denise Donaghey from
Burnfoot claimed gold in the senior ladies section
after taking a few hard knocks. But she gave as good
as she took and came out on top. Denise also claimed
bronze in Kata at the competition. The cadet team of
Glen Barron, Dermot McFeely, Padraig Kerlin and Sean
Campbell had the audience cheering in the popular
rotation team event. |

The adrenalin was high
as kicks, sweeps and great control gave them a
winning gold medal and a silver cup for the
keeping.Meanwhile, the girls' cadet team consisting
of Katy Holly, Laura McGlinchey and Aisling
McCallion were exhausted at the end of some really
tough bouts but earned themselves second place.
Dermot McFeely was on a high, claiming bronze in the
senior kata. In the individuals he gave a good fight
but lost out in the last few seconds and gained
second place. Another cadet, Padraig Kerlin showed
great style and control and took a few hard kicks
from his opponents in the individuals. But he stood
his ground and earned himself a second place. Dean
Barron was in good fighting form on the day and
showed some great skills in all his fights.
His determination showed in the final but luck
wasn't on his side when his opponent scored to the
head in the last seven seconds leaving him claiming
second place. |

Joe Smith took an
injured Dean Barron's place in the senior rotation
team and along with Shawn Barron and Martin McCole
gained second place. Conor Kerlin , the youngest of
the group, claimed bronze in his kata section and
put up a good fight which earned him a second place.
Coach Shawn Barron said he was very proud of his
squad who stood their ground at the weekend against
some very tough opposition, especially an
experianced English squad. Shawn who claimed gold in
the veterans section said his squad "used their
experiance in some really tough and aggresive bouts
and came out jubilant". Meanwhile, he said he was
looking forward to the upcoming annual tournament at
Aileach.
"I'm very proud of all who took part on the day and
I'm looking forward to our next big Ulster Karate
Federation annual event which takes place in Aileach
Youth Club, Burnfoot, on Sunday, March 28," said
Shawn. Competitors from England, Scotland, Dublin,
Carlow and from as far away as Eastern Europe will
compete. Anyone with an interest in Martial Arts
should mark it in their diaries.
