Lost symbols and gear sticks 13.04.10

LEARNING to drive is top of the Donegal to-do list this year with 'The Official Driver Theory Test' among the books taken out most from libraries around the county.
The driver theory manual was the second and fourth most popular library withdrawal in Donegal libraries in January, new figures show.
The figures were released by the Donegal public library service as part of Rediscover Your Local Library Week that runs from April 19 - April 25.
The top reads in Donegal were 'The Lost Symbol' by Dan Brown followed by 'The Official Driver Theory Test' and 'Brooklyn' by Colm Toibin. Chick lit also featured prominently with works by Marian Keyes and Patricia Scanlan also high on the list.
Children and parents in Inishowen are being urged to take part in Rediscover Your Local Library Week with lots of activities planned for Buncrana, Carndonagh and Moville libraries.
Among the events are 'Pull up a
Chair and Escape in a Book’; the 'Stop and Read' initiative and 'Buy None, Get 10 Free'.Library Council chairperson, Senator Mark Dearey explained:“The aim of the week is to celebrate the fantastic things that happen in libraries around the country right throughout the year. We are thrilled that Bord Gáis Energy has partnered with us for this programme - without their support the week would not be possible.”
He added: “The old image of libraries as stuffy, quiet places where people were constantly told to be quiet has gone. Now our libraries are dynamic community facilities which are there to be enjoyed by all – young and old. The Bord Gáis Energy Rediscover Your Local Library week should remind people just how great their library is and, for people who haven’t visited recently, we hope this week will kick start the habit of a lifetime.”
There are 352 public libraries in Ireland with a total of 14.25 million visits made to them each year. 4.5 million of those visits are by children while 305,000 Irish children are registered as library members.
It’s free to join a library. Simply call in taking proof of address and fill in the registration form. Your library card entitles you to borrow 10 books for three weeks. If you don't read them in time, just phone the library and they will be renewed. You can also join online at www.donegallibrary.ie .
