“Hello Donal, it’s Wayne Rooney” 26.03.10

Red Devils star phones Moville man

A MOVILLE businessman got the shock of his life when he answered his phone and Wayne Rooney was on the other end of the line.
Manchester United fan, Donal Skelly, couldn’t believe his ears when the star forward called following the Reds’ recent win over Milan in the Champions League.
The call came about after another local man, John Duffy, from Redcastle, spotted some United players in a restaurant at Deansgate, Manchester, earlier this month.
Celtic fan, John, immediately texted United-mad, Donal, to tell him he was sitting near Park Ji Sung and Rafael when Wayne and Colleen Rooney walked into the restaurant.
“I replied to John to tell Wayne - thanks for signing my son’s shirt! And the next thing I knew Rooney himself was on the phone,” Donal said.
“I said hello and he said ‘This is Wayne Rooney, I’m with your mate John Duffy and he tells me you’re a big United fan’. I didn’t know what to say because I was shocked and didn’t really believe it was actually him,” Donal added.
John had arranged the call

after running into Wayne in the restaurant toilets. The Redcastle man asked Rooney, who scored twice against Milan the night before, how he got so much power in his headers and if he was looking forward to the World Cup; before asking the star to call Donal in Moville.
Donal, who has a season ticket in the scoreboard end at Old Trafford, regularly flies over to see United and was at the Carling Cup final triumph over Aston Villa in London last month.
The Moville taxi man has been a United fan all his life and hopes to see his heroes eclipse Liverpool with a record 19th league title in May.
Part of a United-mad family, Donal’s mother, Sadie, and brother, Liam, regularly travel to watch Alex Ferguson’s team in action.
