Michael McLaughlin - Appreciation 26.11.10

MICHAEL McLaughlin, a founder member of Buncrana Tidy Towns initiative, passed away suddenly on Monday, November 15.
For the past two decades, Michael devoted much of his spare time to improving the environment within and around his beloved home town. His aim, quite simply, was to make Buncrana a better place in which to live, and to visit.
Michael loved the Swan Park riverside walk and the area around the Castle Bridge in particular, and his wish to share its beauty with others inspired his drive to make the area wheelchair accessible. So dedicated to the cause was he, that his idea of a walk was to take a bag along and pick up litter as he went.
Michael McLaughlin poignantly receives a life time achievement award from his Tidy Towns colleagues just days before his sudden death.
His drive and enthusiasm was inspirational in spurring many people into joining the group and to strengthening the resolve of members in those moments when, faced by setbacks, morale was low.
Without his dedication, the Tidy Towns initiative would not be where it is today. We all owe him and his memory a great debt of thanks and appreciation. His will be sorely missed. We wish to take this opportunity to pass on our sincere sympathy to Neil, Paddy, Kathleen, Helen, Mike and all his extended family.
