Pupils and businesses team up 21.01.10

SEVEN schools in Donegal including Inishowen are twinning with local businesses to give students work experience aimed at helping their future careers.
The schools including Crana College, Buncrana and Carndonagh Community School, are taking part in the Government-backed Schools Business Partnership that twins them with companies in their locality.
Crana College has been twinned with Inishowen Engineering while Carndonagh Community School has been teamed with National Irish Bank.
Meanwhile, Errigal College, Letterkenny, is teaming up with Allied Irish Bank; Deele College, Raphoe, with Donegal Creameries; Finn Valley College, Stranorlar, with Coillte Teoranta; Royal & Prior Secondary School, Raphoe, with the University of Ulster and St. Columba's College, Stranorlar with Marks & Spencer.
Senator Cecilia Keaveney welcomed the scheme. "I would like to see hundreds of Donegal firms and students gain from using this scheme. The student of today is the employer or employee of tomorrow.
"With our history of unemployment and the dependence on fishing, farming and manufacturing, we need those industries and other sectors to offer students an insight into working life and the opportunities that are out there to diversify from what we are traditionally known for," she said.

Students taking part in the scheme are assigned a local business mentor to help them through school, receive advice on CV preparation and interviews, and sign up for work experience.
"Staying in school is vital to a young person’s development and life chances. Programmes such as the Schools Business Partnership equip young people with valuable entrepreneurial skills.
"I'm delighted with these types of initiatives but will be in contact with our school principals to see how they impact locally or how, perhaps they need to be adapted for further progress to be made."
