Inishowen to sparkle at Christmas 15.11.10

BUNCRANA Christmas Lights Committee have been busy erecting a whopping 12,000 lights to make the town sparkle this festive season.
Volunteers were out in force early last week as they began the arduous task of stringing up the thousands of lights that will criss-cross the town.
“We have a great group of people who give up their time to come out and put up these lights,” said spokesman, Nicholas Crossan. “The new LED lights, which we used for the first time last year, proved a great success. They were cheaper to run and we’re hoping to add more new lights this year.”
Cllr Crossan said the Dr Denis McLaughlin Road, leading to Ardravan Square, would be lit this year for the first time.

“We’re acutely aware of the impact the recession is having, but we’re appealing to businesses to contribute whatever they can to the cost of running the lights,” Cllr Crossan continued. “If every business could give a little, it would really help spread the load.”
The committee distributed envelopes to households in Buncrana last year and got a good response. Envelopes won’t be distributed this year, but Cllr Crossan appealed to the public to donate whatever they can.
“We’d like donations, no matter how small and we’ll be holding collections in the coming weeks,” he said. “The main thing is to get the town lit up for the children and to help create a good Christmassy vibe in Buncrana.”
No date has yet been set for the official light up but Santa has confirmed that he will be in attendance on either the first or second Sunday in December.

* Meanwhile, the Greencastle Christmas Tree Committee would like to thank the residents of Greencastle/Shrove for contributing to their recent envelope collection. If anyone missed collection and wish to make a donation, envelopes/donations can be left in Pat’s Shop or Greencastle Post Office.
The committee will also run a fundraiser on Saturday, November 27, in the Sean Ti Bar, Greencastle.
