GARDAI in Inishowen are
urging people to be vigilant to "opportunistic"
crime around the peninsula. Inspector David Kelly
said while economic downturns generally brought
about a rise in crime, a noticeably large increase
was not evident in Inishowen.
"What we are seeing are more opportunistic crimes.
If somebody sees something in front of them, they
might give in to the temptation to take it. These
people would not fit the profile of a hardened
criminal." Buncrana-based Inspector Kelly urged
people not to make opportunistic crime easier.
"We would ask people to work with us in partnership
and make sure they lock their doors and don't leave
things on display in their cars. We would ask
farmers and builders etc, to lock machinery out of
sight when not in use," he added.
"If people see anything unusual in their
neighbourhoods such as a car acting suspiciously we
would ask them to jot down the make, model and
registration number without putting themselves in
any danger.
"It might be perfectly innocent, but if a crime is
subsequently reported, this information will be of
great assistance to us," he said. |
