Greencastle takes part in Foyle Days 12.06.09

THE banks of the Foyle from Derry to Greencastle will be alive with activity this weekend to celebrate the waterway's vast maritime heritage as part of the Foyle Days 2009 event.
Organised by Derry City Council and facilitated by Londonderry Port, Lough's Agency and Ilex, the event kicks off on Saturday, June 13 at Queen's Quay and promises a range of unique family activities over the two-day event.
Shroove-based harbourmaster for Derry, Bill McCann said:
"This event promotes the accessibility of the River Foyle, highlighting the range of activities that are available for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Londonderry Port is delighted to be associated with this event and is looking forward to a great weekend."
Eco-based tours, exploring the riverbanks and creeks of the River Foyle will be offered by Moville's Just Kayak. The Culmore Sailing Club will also be in attendance along the riverfront with demonstrations from the larger Foyle

Punt boats. The Derry Open Yacht Race is sure to provide a spectacle and will leave from the pontoon at 3pm on Saturday and make its way to Greencastle.
Other highlights include a portable diving pool where the City of Derry Sub Aqua Diving Club will be offering visitors an opportunity to experience scuba diving in a safe environment. Supervised canoeing sessions will also be provide by the Foyle Paddlers canoeing club while junior members of the club demonstrate their canoe slalom at the Foyle Pontoon throughout the afternoon. Advance booking for taster sessions at the information desk on site is essential.
There is also the opportunity to avail of a historical tour of the Ebrington Site, visiting the Atlantic Memorial Exhibition in the Workhouse and the Spanish Armada Exhibition in the Tower Museum. A free shuttle bus service will be provided and tours will depart from the lay-by opposite Quay West at 12pm, 1.30pm and 3.00pm daily.
The Lough's Agency will profile the work of the organisation through their display in the Maritime Marquee. The agency's Andy Sides explained: "Our fresh water bug sample display is hugely popular with children and familes alike. We're really looking forward to the weekend and are thrilled to be associated with the Foyle Days 2009 event."
