Free course for Inishowen dads  28.10.09

“I HAD figured out how not to do the bad things but no one told me there were good things I could be doing". These are the words of an Inishowen dad as told to the organiser of a free new course for fathers and sons in the peninsula.
'Fathers and Sons - Staying Connected' will run on Tuesdays from November 3 until December 1 in Crana College, Buncrana. The course is also open to grandfathers, stepfathers and male guardians.
Course facilitator David Simpson explained: "Going to a parents' course is not about not being able to cope. Boys lives have changed, the world has changed and the problems and the challenges they face are different. So as fathers, stepfathers and grandfathers we need to be up to date about what they need and how to help them cope.”
The new course will look at boys’ lives today, the challenges for them and how fathers can help them deal with the challenges successfully.
One father who attended a similar course previously said: "I wouldn’t normally go to this kind of thing but now that I am here I can see the benefit of it. I find myself thinking about it during the week."
Mr Simpson said fathers had a very important role in boys’ lives.
"Boys need their fathers, stepfathers,

grandfathers or a good role model in their lives. A father’s contribution can help a boy do well at school and stay out of trouble. This course is for any man in a parenting role with boys," added Moville-based Mr Simpson.
The course will be run from 7.30pm – 9.30pm and there is no admission charge. It is free. Men are invited to come to the first evening with no obligation to attend future evenings. For more information about the course please ring Rory O’Neill at Crana College. on 93 61488 or 086 6097594.
