'Growing' interest in Newtown allotment  19.10.09

PLANS for a 24-space allotment to allow people grow their own fruit and vegetables in Newtowncunningham are well underway. Gardener Gareth Austin is helping local farmer Robert Tourish plan out the new scheme in the townland of Dooish overlooking Lough Swilly about a mile from Newtown. After hearing Gareth describe, on his BBC Radio Foyle slot, the need for more allotments in the Inishowen/Derry region Robert Tourish got in touch.
He said the land has been previously rotated between potatoes and barley so is well worked and is free draining.
“When Robert contacted me about his idea I was delighted that we managed to generate interest among landowners about the potential for allotments”, said Gareth. “The field is on a lovely elevated position and the views across Loch Swilly and the surrounding areas are beautiful - it will be a real pleasure to garden and picnic with those views." Each allotment plot will be substantial in size - about 75ftx15ft - to allow gardeners Gareth Austin
experiment and grow as much as they like. People can take on two or three allotments if they prefer, says Gareth.
“I think we’re offering a really good site with good soil and each allotment comes with a waterpoint. There will be a communal compost area and I can provide as much extra soil as gardeners' require if they’re looking to build raised beds. A neighbouring farmer is also on hand to provide manure. Robert Tourish said he was looking forward to the project coming to fruition.
“We have space for another 48 allotments right away if the demand exists. The cost of each allotment will be €3 per week so it's within everyone's budget and presents great value for money," said Robert.
