Amateur snapper in 'pole position' 24.06.09

Inishowen Independent

AN amateur photographer in Culdaff was in pole position when he snapped this spectacular shot outside his home during the Donegal International Rally. Denis O’Connor was on hand to capture the scene when Paul McDermott and navigator Caolan Gaffney crashed just 500 metres into the Culdaff stage on Friday afternoon.
“There’s a little hump on the road that sent all the cars into the air and made for a really spectacular start to the stage,” said Mr O’Connor. “McDermott’s car flew into the air and hit a bank with a stile in it. The car rolled, hit my pillar and ended in an upright position.
“There were plenty of marshals on the scene, and the spectators weren’t in any danger. Thankfully, there were no injuries and the driver was a very nice young man.”
Friday was Mr O’Connor’s first experience of a rally. “I’m more into golfing and angling, but I enjoyed every bit of the rally – I hope it comes back to Inishowen,” he said. “I was stranded in the house anyway, but I got a great view of it and was fascinated to see the skill of the drivers. There’s a 90° corner just past my house, and I couldn’t believe the speed at which the drivers took it.” For more rally coverage see this week's Inishowen Independent.
