Public meeting planned for Carndonagh 01.10.09

A Carndonagh-based group opposed to the introduction of charges for recycling are to hold a public meeting in the town next week as they step up their campaign.
Members of CARC (Citizens Against Recycling Charges) have already voiced their strong opposition to the introduction of charges at the Civic Amenity Site in the town.
They have already staged a protest outside the council offices in Lifford and have circulated a petition, which they claim, over 3,000 people have signed.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent Charlie Williams a spokesperson for CARC said that many people in Inishowen are angry that they are being asked to pay money to recycle.

“For many years people could bring their recycling to this site for free. The public acceptance of this place was tremendous. Citizens of the town and the wider area were disciplined, separating their goods and returning them. Now the Recycling Centre is almost abandoned.”
He also maintained that
there has been a dramatic increase of fly-tipping in the countryside, and said with more back yard burning dangerous toxic fumes are being released in our atmosphere.
Now the group plan to hold their first public meeting at the
Inishowen Development Board offices on Monday October 5th at 8.30pm in an effort, says Charlie Williams, to give local people an opportunity to voice their opinions on the recycling charges.
“We’ve had our protests, we’ve had our petition circulating and now we have a public meeting and this will be an opportunity for members of the public to make their voices heard.”
He said the meeting is open to all and the group, and added that local councillors have also been invited for what, he says, promises to be a lively debate on the future of recycling services in the peninsula. (Inishowen Independent)
