Keep Donegal beaches clean - Blaney 07.06.07

Deputy Niall Blaney has urged visitors to keep Donegal beaches clean following the award of eleven Blue Flags to the county.
"Keeping our beaches clean is crucial for the county’s tourism industry. Donegal has some of the finest beaches in Ireland and it is vital that we protect our natural assets," said the Donegal North East TD.
Deputy Blaney said the eleven Blue Flags got the local tourist season "off to a good start".
Shroove beach which retained its Blue Flag status. The beaches to be awarded the coveted accolade were Portsalon, Rossknowlagh, Fintra, Narin-Portnoo, Carrickfinn, Shroove, Bundoran, Killahoey, Marble Hill, Lisfannon and Murvagh.
There was anger in Culdaff, however, after it lost its flag due to persistent camping in the sand dunes.
Deputy Blaney said the awards were an easily recognisable assurance to tourists.
“These beaches were awarded the Blue Flag based on their water quality, facilities for visitors, beach management, environmental information and display facilities,” said the Fianna Fail deputy.
The Fianna Fail TD said the previous Government's "commitment to improving water quality" had paid dividends.
“€4.7 billion is allocated for the improvement and expansion of national water services in the National Development Plan 2007-2013. That is an increase of 27% spent under the previous National Development Plan.”
And he said the eleven Blue Flags would help consolidate Donegal's growing reputation as a surfing hotspot.
“Donegal has made quite a name for itself in surfing circles as one of the more unspoilt shorelines in the country and these Blue Flag awards will help consolidate that reputation,” he added.
