Teacher Angeline celebrates Open
University award
18.05.11
AN INISHOWEN teacher is
celebrating being awarded a Masters of Education by
the Open University in Ireland (OU). Angeline Ruddy
who works at Moville Community College was conferred
with her degree at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast
last weekend.
Angeline from Foden, Carndonagh, said the OU
provided her with the flexibility she needed as a
mother of two young children.
“I chose the OU because of the variety of courses
available. Its flexibility also allowed me to
continue my studies while starting a family,” she
said. Angeline is married to Malin GAA player
Patrick Kelly. The couple have two daughters,
two-and-a-half year old Ava and one-and-a-half year
old Clara. |
They are also looking
forward to the arrival of their third child later
this summer.
“I had two children while continuing my studies. The
flexibility of tutorials and support my tutor gave
me enabled me to continue my studies around sleep
times with a 14 month old and a new born,” she
added. She completed her Masters in three years,
travelling intermittently to tutorials in Belfast
and Dublin.
“I fully enjoyed my OU experience even travelling
the 12-hour return journey to tutorials,” added
Angeline, who teaches Science, Biology and Religion
at the Moville secondary school.
A total of 147 students received their degrees at

ceremony on Saturday.
The students spent an average of six years balancing
the demands of their studies, work and other
commitments, to reach their OU milestone.
Open University director John D’Arcy said: “At a
time when university education is becoming more
expensive, the Open University in Ireland remains
the obvious choice for students who want to minimise
student debt and continue to earn while they study.”
A typical OU degree costs between £4,200 and £5,860. |
