Army tanks roll into Buncrana

A MASSIVE convoy of Irish army soldiers descended on
Inishowen on Tuesday and Wednesday for a crucial
military operation at Fort Dunree.
Fifty vehicles, including tanks, lorries, jeeps and
vans, carrying more than 150 military personnel from
the 28th infantary battlion weaved its way through
Buncrana ahead of a 48-hour peace support exercise
at Dunree. Two army helicopters were also involved
in the vital army mission. |

at the Irish Army press office in Newbridge
confirmed that many of the troops involved will be
redeployed to the troubled Middle East region over
the next few months.
“The exercise at Dunree is a peace support one in
preparation for overseas deployment. Subject to Dail
approval, some of the soldiers currently training in
Inishowen could well find themselves in Lebanon
during the summer,” he said.
With most of the 150-strong contingent stationed at
Finner Camp, Ballyshannon there are also a number
from the wider brigade in the west of the country.
As well as full combat exercises, the soldiers will
be completing various other operations in farmlands,
which have been rented for a short time.
Cmdt Nolan confirmed that manoeuvres began on
Tuesday evening. They are expected to wind up later
today. |
