The Big Spring Clean
15.04.11
INISHOWEN people are
being urged to get behind the clean up planned for
this Saturday.
The spring clean-up blitz is planned throughout
Inishowen including Buncrana, Moville, Newtown and
Ballyliffin and is a combined effort, organised by
Tidy Towns, Inishowen Development Partnership,
Inishowen Tourism and Donegal County Council as well
as local county councillors.
The organisers are appealing to families, community
groups, sporting associations, local business,
clubs, tourist providers and individuals to come out
on the day in their own areas to get involved in the
clean-up.
Buncrana Mayor Michael Grant said: “I am calling on
all communities to get behind this clean up which is
taking place throughout Inishowen.
“What we would like to see is everyone to take an
hour or so on Saturday to go out and clean up around
their own home.
“Just think if everyone cleaned up the couple of
hundred yards on either side how much progress we
could make.”
The Mayor said: “Last year the Tidy Towns committee
in Burnfoot and Bridgend had a clean up and we went
along to give them a hand.
“There was quite a load of stuff collected and since
then things have progressed for them.
“So at a Tidy Town meeting some weeks ago we decided
to try and extend the clean up to the whole
Inishowen 100 area.”
He added: “What we want to do here is to raise
awareness as well as to get as much of Inishowen
cleaned up.
“To be honest littering is an ongoing problem and so
we would hope that this clean up helps in some way
to keeping the area tidy.” |

Anyone interested in
assisting with the clean up is asked to contact
their local County Councillor for information on how
to get started and clean-up kits such as bags and
gloves.
Cllr Mickey Doherty also encouraged the local
community to get involved in the clean up.
“Inishowen is one of the most beautiful peninsulas
in the country, but it has been blighted with a
disgraceful amount of litter,” Cllr Doherty said
encouraging people who have hi-vis jackets or
pickers to bring them along.
“From Manor to Malin, we’re looking for the
community to turn out and the council will take away
the bagged rubbish.”
“Last year’s clean up was a great success, although
only a couple of weeks later the litter was back –
you’d think people had done it deliberately. But the
more people we can get involved in this, hopefully
that will reduce.
Cllr Doherty outlined the assembly points in east
Inishowen. They are: St Mary’s Community Hall, Muff;
Quigley’s Point Community Centre; the Bayview Bar in
Redcastle; Greencastle Community Centre; Carrowmena
Community Centre; Gleneely Colts FC clubhouse; and
the shore front car park in Moville. Cllr Doherty
can be contacted on 087 2121789.
Newtown Community Development Initiative, (NCDI)
will continue their ongoing clean up this Saturday,
April 16. Already 10 pick up lorry loads have been
lifted by NCDI volunteers so far this year. Meet at
10.30am at the NCDI office. Each person comes in
their own right as a community volunteer.
Meanwhile a community clean up of Pollan Beach and
environs will take place on Sunday April 17.
Volunteers are asked to assemble at the car park at
2.30 pm. Some high visible vests and gloves will be
available, however, if anyone can bring their own
they are asked to do so.
A social evening with light refreshments and music
will follow in the Strand Hotel, getting under way
at 6pm. |
