A GAA club hopes to
cash in on the soaring demand for scrap metal with a
unique fundraiser to collect old waste from people's
homes and garages.
Buncrana GAA club will launch its 'Scrap Saturday
Big Christmas Clear Out' on Saturday in association
with the local tidy towns committee.
"We plan to facilitate the lifting of old waste
metals and other materials throughout the entire
parish," said club chairman and former senior
Donegal player, Paul McGonigle.
"We will sort this material ourselves and then
supply it to a local scrap merchant for recycling.
This will provide us with some much-needed funding
and also carry out a valuable community and
environmental service," he added. He said the club
will then make a donation to Buncrana Tidy Towns.
Team leaders from the club will be given catchment
areas and will be tasked with arranging pick-ups.
Collections will begin on November 5 and will
continue for the following three or four Saturdays,
depending on demand.
"We'll collect any old items containing metal, from
your garages, sheds, and back yards to get rid of
all that clutter.
The club says householders can enjoy a pre-Christmas
clear-out without the cost of skips or recycling.
Among the items that will be collected and recycled
for free are fridges and washing machines, toasters,
TVs, copper tanks and pipes. The club will even pick
up your old car, tractor, farm machinery and
batteries. If you would like to find out more about
