New Buncrana policing chair  21.11.11

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

A BUNCRANA publican said he is looking forward to addressing the concerns of people in the town after being elected chair of the local Joint Policing Committee.
Councillor Peter McLaughlin has succeeded Cllr Joe Doherty, who headed the body since its inception two years ago.
Cllr McLaughlin accepted the position after Councillor Michael Grant decided to stand aside ‘in the interests of committee unity’ after he had earlier been proposed by fellow independent councillor and former Mayor Lee Tedstone. Cllr Grant subsequently agreed to act as JPC deputy chair.
Cllr McLaughlin said he would deal with every issue that came before the Joint Policing Committee to the best of his ability.
“I look forward to working with the committee and the guards to represent the people of the town. I will deal with every letter sent to the JPC and try to assist and help everyone. Anyone who feels that they have something to say should do so,” he added.
Local TD Charlie McConalogue congratulated Cllr McLaughlin on his new appointment and also commended Michael Grant for the "magnanimous way in which he handled the situation".
Garda Superintendent Kevin English also wished Peter success as new chair and Michael Grant as vice-chair.“I’m looking forward to working with both of you in the future,” he said.

He also commended those who attend the regular JPC meetings.
“We are very lucky to have such positive commitment and such a degree of vibrancy in Buncrana. The JPC is an excellent forum for airing certain issues which can then be addressed before they lead to negative media headlines – which is something we want to prevent,” he added.
