DONEGAL County Council is keen to install a series
of new bus shelters across south Inishowen in a bid
to keep school children and other public transport
users safer along our roads.
As winter approaches with mornings and evenings
becoming darker, the new structures would be used by
hundreds of primary and secondary school pupils from
Burt to Buncrana.
Revealing the cost of each shelter, Council roads
engineer Charlie Kerr said the overall expense could
be offset by the involvement of private business.
“Each shelter costs in the region of €5,000 to
€6,000 in total to install and I would be very
anxious to pursue funding for them,” he said.
“We could use local people to build them and ask
private businesses to advertise for a period of
time. When I worked in Kilmacrennan previously we
installed shelters and recouped €1200 a year in
advertising from a supermarket in the area,” Mr Kerr
added.
Fianna Fail Councillor Rena Donaghey, who has long
been an advocate of a shelter at the Cashel Na Cor
Centre in Buncrana, also supported the proposed
move.
“There is money there to be drawn down for bus
shelters so we should make sure we take it,” she
said.
Bridgend Councillor John Ryan was similarly
enthusiastic about the possible new shelters.
“I think we should make an approach to have four or
five installed from Burt to Cashel Na Cor,” he said. |
