Peadar seeks charity swimmers

An Inishowen native who has just completed an
ambitious charity swim around the Moville lighthouse
is looking for 100 volunteers to join him in the
Foyle next year.
Moville man Peadar McKevitt swam from the pier to
the well-known local landmark and back – a distance
of 1300 metres - to raise money for the Children in
Crossfire charity.
Battling fast-moving currents in the choppy waters
of Lough Foyle, Peader made it back to dry land in
just under an hour before enjoying a well-earned
pint of Guinness with well-wishers on shore.
In summer 2012 he will be back to lead the inaugural
record-breaking ‘Moville Lighthouse Swim’ – with
eight volunteers already signed up and another 92 to
follow. |

Peadar, who spends much
of the year working across the globe in Dubai, said
anyone can sign up for the 2012 charity event – even
if they can’t swim!
“I’ve got a Dubai-based Belfast guy, who swam the
English Channel, giving technical advice, and he
reckons that even if a person cannot swim, with 9
months of preparation, they could easily make this
distance. Current swimming capability is not an
issue, and non-swimmers are welcome, as a full
training plan will be developed. It’s not a race,”
he said.
“The swim is expected to take place next July or
August, depending on optimal tides and approval
being granted by the relevant agencies. While more
than 100 may ultimately undertake the challenge, the
first 100 people to register will be given a special
certificate and designation of ‘Inish Eoghain 100’
Charity Swim Hero,” Peadar added.
The mammoth Moville swim will raise money next year
for Children in Crossfire, the RNLI and a third
charity of the participants’ individual choice. To
