14,500 Donegal women get BreastChecked 04.10.11

BREASTCHECK has screened 14,500 women in Co Donegal with a free mammogram since arriving in the county in 2009.
Donegal Action for Cancer Care (DACC) welcomed the uptake figures saying it had lobbied extensively for the service and campaigned for a second mobile screening unit for the county.
"We in DACC, with our ongoing work were able to highlight to the director of BreastCheck that all eligble women inthe county could not be screened in the time-frame suggested by BreastCheck," said DACC chairperson, Betty Holmes.
The service is due to complete its first round of screening for eligible women in the county on Friday. The BreastCheck mobile unit is currently based at the council offices car park in Letterkenny.
BreastCheck is a Government-funded screening service offered to women aged between 50 and 64 every two years.
DACC chairperson, Betty Holmes.
"A mammogram is a simple procedure and an appointment only takes about half an hour in total," added Betty Holmes.
"DACC would like to acknowledge the help and ongoing support to them of the National Cancer Screening Service."
BreastCheck and DACC jointly encourage every woman in Donegal who receives an invitation for a mammogram to go.
DACC also urged women aged between 50 and 64 to ensure they are registered with the service by phoning Freephone 1850 45 45 55 or visiting www.breastcheck.ie
