Third of babies born outside marriage 01.03.11

MORE than one-in-three babies were born outside of marriage in Co Donegal, according to the latest figures. There were 773 babies born outside of marriage out of a total of 2,214 births in 2008. This translates to 34.9% of all births in the county. The Co Donegal rate is higher than the national average of 33.4%. It is also higher than the average for the province of Ulster, including Monaghan and Cavan, at 32.5%.
The rate of births outside of marriage in Co Donegal is only lower than the average Leinster rate of 35.3%. The counties of Munster recorded an average rate of 32.3% births outside of marriage while Connacht's average rate was 27%.
Of the babies born in Co Donegal in 2008, 1,141 were boys and 1,073 were girls. The breakdown for babies born outside of marriage was 400 boys and 373 girls, the CSO figures show. A sample of other counties show that Kerry had 642 babies born outside of marriage; Leitrim, 124; Mayo, 532; Roscommon, 208 and Sligo, 295. Galway city had 354 while the county had 728. Cavan had 371 while Monaghan had 261.
Meanwhile, the CSO's latest vital statistics table for Co Donegal showed that of the 74 births registered in the Buncrana area
in 2008, one mother was under 20 years; 20 mothers were between 20-24; 16 were between 25-29; 20 were between 30-34; 13 were between 35-39 and 4 were between 40-44. There were no births in Buncrana to women 45 and over in 2008.
In the county generally, excluding Letterkenny and Bundoran, 91 babies were born to women under 20; 196 were to women between 20-24; 471 were between 25-29 years; 597 were between 30-34 years; 359 were between 35-39 years; 60 were between 40-44 years and 10 were 45 years and over.
