Donegal population grows by 14,000
people

DONEGAL'S population
has grown by 13,663 people in the last five years,
according to Census 2011. The preliminary report
shows that the county's population has grown from
147,264 in 2006 to 160,927 today. There are almost
an equal number of men and women living in Co
Donegal - 80,411 men and 80,516 women.
By constituency, there are now 82,779 living in
Donegal North East compared to 73,874 in 2006.
Donegal South West now has 78,148 citizens compared
to 73,390 five years ago. The population of Donegal
North East has grown by a considerable 12.1% in the
last five years, the Census figures show.
They also show that the county's housing stock grew
from 70,526 in 2006 to 84,356 today. There are a
whopping 24,066 empty dwellings in Co Donegal
compared to 19,043 five years ago - rise of 5,023 or
26.4%.
Nationally, the 2011 preliminary Census results
reveal that the population in the Republic of
Ireland was 4,581,269 on April 10.
The figure is about 100,000 people more than the
Central Statistics Office had anticipated and could
have significant implications for future economic
planning.
The total number of people now living in Ireland has
risen by over 341,000 people since Census 2006.
The figures also show there are now more females
than males in the country with 981 men for every
1,000 women - this is a reversal on five years ago. |
