War memorial opens in Dunree

A WAR memorial with the
names of 249 men and women from the Inishowen
peninsula who died in World War I was officially
opened in Co Donegal yesterday.
The memorial wall has been erected at Fort Dunree
museum by the Inishowen Friends of Messine. The
group's spokesman, Fearghal O'Boyle, said many of
the people whose names are engraved on the wall,
were "never remembered at all".
"The fallen included Catholics and Protestants,
Orangemen and Hibernians, hurlers and cricketers,
dreamers and adventurers, and those who joined the
war because their political and church leaders of
the time told them it was the right thing to do," he
said. |

"For many years the
only memorials to these men were behind the closed
doors of churches and halls, and many of those who
died were never remembered at all, particularly
among the nationalist community where any connection
to the British army became something you just didn’t
talk about." The memorial was officially opened
yesterday by Donegal County Development Board Peace
and Reconciliation Partnership chairman, Cllr Dessie
Larkin. The partnership contributed Peace III
funding towards the installation of the memorial
wall. |
