All-Ireland gold for Cockhill athlete 13.07.11

INISHOWEN Athletics Club athlete Fergus Cox has been crowned All-Ireland under 14 boys javelin champion.
Fergus took the honours on Sunday with a magnificent throw of 37.47m.
The Cockhill native made the long journey to Tullamore in Co Offaly with his dad and coach Paddy on Saturday and had almost 5 metres to spare over silver medalist Sean Glasheen from Tipperary.
Billy Courtney from Spa Muckross A.C. in Wicklow got the bronze medal with a best of 32.32m. Fergus traveled to Tullamore as the reigning Ulster champion, having won the provincial title in Antrim just a few weeks earlier with a best of 38.14m.
This is his second national title in the throwing events, having scooped gold in the under 12 ball throw three years ago.
Meanwhile, in other events in Tullamore, Conor Hession just missed a medal by 5 seconds in the under 19 boys 3000m. He finished 4th in 9 minutes 42.59 seconds. Patrick Mathews had a gallant run in the under 18 boys 3000m, finishing 10th in 10 minutes 00.80 seconds.
Eadaoin O’ Raw had a very promising performance in the under 12 girls shot, finishing 6th with a best of 7.06m. Pat Loughery secured 13th place in the under 12 boys long jump with 3.79m.
