Shock as oak sculpture sprouts

PEOPLE have been left stunned after Moville's famous
oak monument, the Fid, recently sprouted branches.

Morris, is carved from the single trunk of a large
oak tree. |

It was installed at
Moville pier 18 months ago and attracts hundreds of
visitors each year. But locals were shocked recently
to discover their famous new landmark had started to
grow.
Moville councillor Martin Farren said he was amazed
when locals brought the matter to his attention.
"Someone brought me down to the pier to show me the
branches. It's phenomenal, I couldn't believe it,"
said the councillor.
"We'll have to see what remedial work the Council
can do now to restore it."
Derry botanist Dr Elmer Wood told InishowenNews it
was a "rare" phenomenon for a tree to regrow without

people attributed
spiritual properties to them.
"I'll have to examine the sculpture myself to find
out what caused this to happen," said Mr Wood. |
