Urris priest prepares for new challenge 05.09.11

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

A WELL-known Inishowen priest is on the move in the latest round of Diocesan changes recently announced by Bishop Seamus Hegarty.
Urris-born Fr Michael Canny has been appointed the new parish priest at Glendermott in Derry’s Waterside.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent, he said he is looking forward to a fresh challenge and ‘delighted’ to remain at work in Derry.
“I have been in the city for 30 years and I have found it a pleasant place to live and to minister as a priest. I have made many friends in the city on both sides of the river in civic, inter-church, parish and community life,” he said.
“Because of all these friendships I am pleased to be staying in the city and to be part of the life here particularly as we prepare for the City of Culture 2013,” Fr Canny added.

The face of the Catholic Church here for much of the past decade, Canny will retain his high profile role as spokesman for the Derry Diocese.
“As well as parish work in the Waterside I will still be the diocesan spokesperson. This role offered me the opportunity of making many new friends in the media world. At times it is very demanding, but in the round, I enjoy it,” he said.
With Bishop Hegarty set to be replaced when he turns 75, Canny remains a dark horse for the top job in the Catholic Church here.
