Buncrana has its say on Fullerton memorial 30.04.11

BUNCRANA Town Council were split last week over the location of the memorial to murdered councillor Eddie Fullerton that was unveiled yesterday. At a sometimes heated meeting councillors debated where the memorial should go and finally the Mayor, Cllr Michael Grant used his casting vote to support retaining it at the Stone Jug on the banks of the Crana River.
The Inishowen Independent went on to the streets of Buncrana to see what locals think of the chosen location.
Marie Bourne thought that the Stone Jug location was the correct one.
She said: “I think that that is the right location for something like this.
“I really can’t think of anywhere else you would put it.
“There is no point in putting it out at the dam sure no one would see it there. The only alternative spot I could possibly think of would be up further along the Shorefront. But I think it is in the right place.”
Christy Porter was also of the opinion that the Stone Jug site was the best location for the memorial stone. He said: “I think that it is the right place for this memorial. Sure there are already other memorials there and so they are all connected with each other. I can’t think of anywhere else that you would put something like this except maybe out at Cockhill where he lived. The Stone Jug is an appropriate place as a lot of people use this route going and coming to the shore.”
Pat ‘the Gem’ McLaughlin was in agreement: “The Stone Jug is a great local site and Eddie Fullerton was a local man so where else would you put it.
“A lot of people pass that site, a lot of tourists pass that site so you do want people to be able to see it.
“I think it is a very appropriate site for such a memorial and I can’t think of anywhere else that would be as good.”
Jean Curran was another local woman who was firmly of the belief that the Stone Jug was the best site. She said: “I would think that the Stone Jug is definitely the best place for a memorial stone.
“A lot of people and a lot of tourists use that route so that is the place to have a marker. In many ways something like that will keep the memory of Eddie Fullerton alive and he was a very good man.’
Mary Keogh originally from Moville but who had spent some time living in Buncrana as a boarder also felt the Stone Jug was the best location.
She said: “I spent time here in Buncrana as a boarder some years ago and I think that the Stone Jug is the best site for this memorial. It is a more public site. If you put the stone up out at the dam then it would almost be a private memorial and no one would see it. I think the whole point of a memorial is that people are able to see it and recognise all that Eddie Fullerton did for Buncrana. He was a great man and should be recognised as such.”
