New Greencastle pier chief soon 19.09.11

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

THE appointment of a new Harbour Master at Greencastle is ‘imminent’ following the completion of interviews for the position this month.
Donegal County Council engineer Charlie Kerr said that the process to appoint a new pier chief was ongoing and would be completed very soon. He also revealed that three additional workers have been employed full-time at Inishowen’s largest harbour.
Moville Councillor Martin Farren said that the new harbour master will ‘have a very hard act to follow’ after the retirement of John McClenaghan earlier this year.
“John McClenaghan had great respect in the area and he did a fantastic job. I think it’s important to get a new person appointed to the role as soon as possible because it’s a big area to take charge of including Greencastle, Moville and Carrickarory. With the Clipper Challenge coming up next year we need to get the situation moved on quickly,” he said.

In a turbulent year to date Greencastle pier has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons with fishermen accused of turning away foreign yachts seeking shelter last May. Those claims were since found to be unsubstantiated with many locals calling for those who made them to be ‘named and shamed’.
A bitter atmosphere remains and one of the new harbour master’s first tasks will be to address the ongoing row between a group of traditional fishermen and those who wish to develop a marina in the Foyle.
The new chief will want a united front on Greencastle Harbour ahead of the 2012 Clipper Challenge, which is expected to generate thousands of euro for the North West region next summer.
