Guildhall closes for a year

THE DOORS have been
closed at Derry's iconic Guildhall which will
undergo extensive internal renovations during the
whole of next year.
It is hoped the building will reopen in early 2013
as the City of Culture gets into full swing.
Guildhall staff and elected members are making
preparations for some of the biggest internal
renovations and rearrangement of services in the
lifetime of the building.
"As Derry gears up for the dual celebrations of City
of Culture and the 400th anniversary of our historic
walls in 2013, the building at the heart of our city
life is now set to undergo dramatic internal
renovations alongside the striking external makeover
which is nearing completion," said a spokesperson. |

External works have
seen the restoration of the stonework, roofs,
windows and stained glass of the iconic building, as
well as the famous Guildhall Clock.
Guildhall superintendent, Colin Sharp, officially
closed the gates to the public last Friday.
Meanwhile, the Mayoral Office will be relocated to
Derry City Council Offices, monthly council meetings
will now take place at the Great Hall at Magee
University while committee meetings will be held at
Derry City Council Offices. |
