"Inishowen roads are the best" 20.09.11

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

INISHOWEN'S roads are the best in Donegal - and that’s official. County Council engineer Charlie Kerr, who has worked in several locations across Donegal, confidently declared our roads ‘top of the list’ at the electoral area meeting in Carn.
Fine Gael Councillor John Ryan claimed it was ‘no accident’ that our roads were number one.
“We have the best roads in the county and our colleagues in Lifford may be asking – why? The reason is we have spent our money more efficiently than other areas. We all receive the same amount of money. It’s not an accident that our roads are better. When we do a road, we do it properly,” he said.
“There is a three-year road plan in Inishowen and we’re six months ahead of ourselves, which is fantastic news given the last two winters we’ve had. Some of our roads have been excellently upgraded and won’t need to be looked at for years to come,” Cllr. Ryan added.
Echoing Ryan’s glowing tribute to the Roads Section, Cllr. Martin Farren said Donegal County Council had done an excellent job over the summer months with very limited resources.
“The men on the ground have put in a fantastic effort and they deserve great credit. The Council has done great work at McGowan’s Bridge at The Bayview [Redcastle] and it makes such a difference to people. That bridge was falling apart for years, ” he said.
Inishowen roads get top rating.
Fianna Fail representative Cllr. Rena Donaghey said road improvements had been carried out to a ‘very high standard’.
“A number of our roads in the Desertegney area were of Third World standard but they have been repaired to a very high standard. That work should not go unnoticed and Martin [Farren] is right to commend the work that has been carried out. Everyone has done a phenomenal job,” she said.
Buncrana Mayor Nicholas Crossan concurred with his colleague’s positive views but suggested that the Council avoid popular tourist dates before carrying out work.
“During one of the busiest weekends of the year in August there were many people held up in traffic queues on the main Derry to Buncrana Road and I took a lot of complaints. Maybe it’s something to watch out for; maybe we should avoid (road works) on busy tourist times,” he suggested.
