Jobs for fluent Irish speakers 11.02.11

FLUENT Irish speakers looking for work are advised to brush up their CVs and send them off to Brussels on the double if they want to be included in the European Commission’s latest round of job offers for translators, writes Jessie Magee. The Commission is looking for people to translate documents from Irish and other EU language into English, and the closing date for applications is February 21. Potential candidates must have a university degree, fluent and accurate Irish, excellent English and a sound knowledge of one other official European language. They must also be prepared to move to Brussels, where the jobs are based.
Northwest MEP Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher said jobs for Irish translators have surged since Irish was officially recognised as a working language by the EU in 2005. The Fianna Fáil MEP, who uses Irish on a regular basis in Brussels and Strasbourg, says he is proud to be able to speak and work through Irish “within an international environment”. Irish speakers interested in applying for the positions in Brussels should email a cover letter and CVs in English and Irish, in the Europass format, to the following address: DGT-AT-GA-2011@ec.europa.eu .
