"Friendly" place for breastfeeding

INISHOWEN'S new,
expectant and experienced mums are being invited to
'friendly and informal' La Leche League (LLL)
meetings in a bid to boost the peninsula's low rate
of breastfeeding.
It is widely acknowledged that breastfeeding gives
babies the best start in life and benefits babies
nutritionally and in many other ways.
The local La Leche League organisers say women in
the peninsula traditionally give breastfeeding a go
following their baby's birth, but rates decline
dramatically after six weeks.
"The main reason for this drop is known to be lack
of support for the breastfeeding mother," said local
LLL spokesperson, Claire Gilmour. |
"We are very lucky to
have an LLL group which has been running for 18
years and is led by accredited women who have many
years' breastfeeding experience themselves as well
as experience helping other mothers.
"All of the leaders are volunteers who give their
time freely and are committed to helping the mother
and baby nursing relationship."
LLL offers vital support, encouragement and
information to mothers who wish to breastfeed. |

"Our monthly meetings
are informal and provide time for mother- to-mother
sharing in a friendly atmosphere. Previously,
pregnant women and mothers could only access these
meetings in the evenings but now LLL Inishowen has
set up a new daytime meeting," added Ms Gilmour.
The next evening meeting will be held at the IDP
offices, Pound Street, Carndonagh on Tuesday, May 10
at 7.30pm. The next daytime meeting will take place
at Parentstop, Miller's Way, Millbrae, Carndonagh on
Friday, May 13 at 10.30am. Refreshments are provided
and babies and toddlers are welcome.
