Family law for mum and daughter

IT WAS a case of family law for Clonmany mother and
daughter, Cathy and Leanne McGeoghegan, who have
graduated together with legal degrees.
Cathy (51) and Leanne (21) were awarded BA Honours
degrees in Law at the recent conferring ceremony at
Letterkenny Institute of Technology.
While a first for the college, mother and daughter,
from the Isle of Doagh, each gained a 2:1 result.
It was an extra special achievement for Cathy who
left school at 14. The mother of four only returned
to education in 2005 when she undertook the Leaving
Certificate equivalent at Serenity House in Moville.
"I started the law degree before Leanne but then I
took a year out which meant that we graduated
together," said Cathy.
"I first checked with Leanne to make sure she
wouldn't mind me being in the same class as her and
her college friends, but she was absolutely great
about it and very supportive." |

While she attended
lectures and the canteen with students in her
25-strong class, Cathy didn't take part in the
college social life.
"I drive to and from the college everyday while
Leanne stayed in Letterkenny. I didn't go out
socialising with the students except for a bite to
eat when the course finished up," she added.
Cathy, a part-time chef at the Rusty Nail pub in
Crossconnell, Clonmany, is married to farmer and bus
driver, Daniel. She now hopes to do a Masters degree
in the area of human rights. A keen golfer at
Ballyliffin, she also wants to reinstate her
previous 18-handicap after it rose to 21 during her
intensive studies.
Leanne, meanwhile, has secured a job with an
international financial services company in Dublin. |
