Further delays at new A&E 05.01.11

DONEGAL North East councillor Pádraig MacLochlainn today called on the HSE to "wrap up negotiations" to allow the new A&E ward at Letterkenny Hospital be completed. Works at the new hospital building stalled in November when the main contractor, McNamara's Construction, went into receivership. Following talks with the HSE today, Cllr MacLochlainn received confirmation that the bond insurance in place is adequate to complete the project.

However, he said it would be at least two months before building work could recommence due to ongoing negotiations between the HSE, the receiver, the subcontractors and the bond insurance company.
Cllr MacLochlainn described as "outrageous" that the Government and the HSE did not have a legal clause protecting

the taxpayer and subcontractors in the event of the main contractor going into receivership.
"It is now apparent that critical months will be lost to the taxpayer and more stress and hardship delivered to staff and patients because of the Government's inaction. Furthermore, many subcontractors are severely out of pocket and jobs lost.
"Serious lessons have to be learned from this fiasco and I am calling on the Government and HSE to expedite negotiations and complete the new hospital building at Letterkenny as soon as possible."
